Sample open-ended questions for the reading and writing learning outcomes that may appear in MEB written exam scenarios for this unit. Each question targets a specific kazanım.

1 Reading — E10.5.R1 R1
Students will be able to use written instructions to draw a route on a map.
Read the directions below and answer the questions about the route.
Walking Tour in Antalya Old Town
Welcome to the Antalya Walking Tour! Start at the Clock Tower (Saat Kulesi) in Kaleıçi. Walk straight along Uzun Çarşı Street for about 200 metres. Turn left at the end of the street. You will see Hadrian’s Gate on your right.

After taking photos at the gate, go through it and walk down the hill towards the old harbour. The harbour is about 300 metres away. At the harbour, turn right and walk along the coast. You will pass several cafés and small shops.

Continue walking for 10 minutes until you reach the Karaalioglu Park. The park has a beautiful view of the sea. This is the final stop of the tour. The round trip takes about one hour on foot.

Students will be able to classify different vacation types in a reading text.
Read the descriptions of four holidays and classify each one by completing the table.
Holiday Options
a) Jack has always wanted to explore the Amazon rainforest. He has booked an adventure holiday in Brazil. He is going to go hiking, kayaking and camping in the jungle for two weeks.

b) Mia has never been on a ship before. She has purchased a cruise holiday around the Greek islands. The ship will stop at five different islands, and she will try the local culinary specialities at each stop.

c) Ali and his family have visited many European cities, but they have never been to Prague. They have set a budget and booked a city break for the weekend. They are going to explore the old town and visit famous landmarks.

d) Selin has always loved winter sports. She has booked a skiing holiday in the Alps. She has never tried snowboarding, so this will be her first time. She can’t wait to hit the road!

Read the model email. Then write a similar email to a friend about a holiday you have had (real or imaginary).

Hi Emma,

I hope you are doing well! I have just come back from an amazing city break in İstanbul. I have visited so many beautiful places! I went to the Grand Bazaar and bought some souvenirs. I have also tried the famous Turkish breakfast — it was delicious!

The weather was great, and I walked around the old town for hours. I have never seen such a beautiful city before. I have taken hundreds of photos!

Have you ever been to İstanbul? You should visit it someday. I’m sure you would love it.
