Heroes Among Us
Last summer, I met Dr. Ayşe Demir, a doctor who works in a small village clinic. She is very ambitious — she always sets high goals for herself and never gives up. Every day, she has to treat dozens of patients who come from nearby villages. Some children in the area suffer from iron deficiency, which means they don’t have enough of an important nutrient in their bodies. Dr. Demir is a brave woman; she is not afraid of working long hours in difficult conditions. She makes quick and decisive choices when there is an emergency — she never hesitates. The villagers are very impressed by her dedication; they admire her deeply. As a powerful role model, she inspires young girls to study medicine. One day, her successor — the next doctor who will continue her work — will carry on her mission.

2 Reading — E10.9.R2 R2
Students will be able to interpret a text to identify the author’s wishes.
Read the text below and answer the questions about the author’s wishes.
If I Were a Superhero
My name is Can and I am 16 years old. I often think about the problems in the world, and I wish I could do something about them. If I were a superhero, I would help people who suffer from hunger and poverty. I would fly to poor countries and bring them food and clean water. I wish there were no wars in the world. If I had the power of mind control, I would make all the leaders think about peace. I also care about the environment. I wish people didn’t pollute the oceans. If I could clean all the seas in one day, I would do it without hesitation. I wish every child could go to school. If I were powerful enough, I would build schools in every village. These are my wishes, and I believe that even without superpowers, we can all be heroes by helping each other.
  1. a What does Can wish for about hunger and poverty?
  2. b If Can were a superhero, what would he do about wars? Which superpower would he use?
  3. c What environmental problem does Can care about? What would he do if he could?
  4. d What does Can wish for about education?
  5. e According to Can, do we need superpowers to be heroes? Why or why not?
Metindeki “I wish…” ve “If I were…, I would…” cümlelerine dikkat et. “I wish + Past Simple” yazarın gerçekleşmesini istediği ama şu an gerçek olmayan dileklerini ifade eder. “If I were…, I would…” ise hayali bir durumu anlatır (Conditional Type 2).
3 Writing — E10.9.W1 W1
Students will be able to write a paragraph imagining themselves as a hero/heroine.
Write a paragraph (6–8 sentences) imagining yourself as a superhero. Use the model paragraph and prompts below.
Model Paragraph
“If I were a superhero, I would have the power of rapid healing. I would go to hospitals and help sick people get better instantly. I wish I could cure every disease in the world. If I had this power, I would travel to countries where there is a deficiency of doctors. I wish no one had to suffer from illness. Even without superpowers, I try to be brave and help others whenever I can.”
Writing Prompts
• What superpower would you have? (time travel, shape-shifting, mind control, rapid healing, wall crawling…)
• How would you use this power to help people?
• What do you wish you could change in the world?
• What would you do if you had this power right now?
• Can we be heroes without superpowers?
Use: If I were…, I would… (Conditional Type 2) and I wish + Past Simple (Wish Clauses)
Conditional Type 2: “If + Past Simple, would + V1” — hayali/gerçek olmayan durumlar için kullanılır. Örnek: “If I were a superhero, I would fly.” Wish Clauses: “I wish + Past Simple” — şu an gerçek olmayan dilekler için. Örnek: “I wish I could help everyone.” “be” fiili için her özne ile “were” kullan: “If I were…”, “I wish I were…”
4 Writing — E10.9.W1 W1
Students will be able to write a paragraph imagining themselves as a hero/heroine.
Write a paragraph (6–8 sentences) about your personal real-life hero. Use the prompts below.
Writing Prompts
Think about a real-life modern hero — a teacher, doctor, firefighter, parent, or someone who has touched your life. Answer these questions in your paragraph:

• Who is your hero? What do they do?
• Why are they your hero? What qualities do they have? (brave, ambitious, decisive, caring…)
• How have they touched your life or the lives of others?
• What would you do if you were like them? (If I were…, I would…)
• What do you wish you could do to be more like them? (I wish I could…)
Use: If I were…, I would… (Conditional Type 2) and I wish + Past Simple (Wish Clauses)
Gerçek hayattan bir kahramanını seç (anne, baba, öğretmen, doktor, itfaiyeci vb.). Önce onu tanıt, sonra özelliklerini yaz. Conditional Type 2: “If I were as brave as my mother, I would help everyone.” Wish Clauses: “I wish I were as decisive as her.” Tema kelimelerini kullan: ambitious, brave, decisive, powerful, impressed, treat, touch someone’s life.
