Read the text below. Find and categorise the expressions used for wishes, regrets and unreal past situations.
If Only I Could Go Back
Murat is now 45 years old and often thinks about the choices he made when he was younger. He says, “I wish I had studied harder at school. If I had paid more attention in my English classes, I could have got a better job abroad.”
He also regrets not spending enough time with his grandparents. “If I had visited them more often, I would have learned so many things from them. I wish I hadn’t been so busy with my own life.”
However, Murat does not only focus on regrets. He says, “If I hadn’t moved to Ankara, I wouldn’t have met my wife. So not all my decisions were wrong.” He believes that every experience, good or bad, shapes who we are today.

A Conversation Between Friends
Defne: I’ve been thinking a lot about high school lately. I wish I had joined the basketball team. I was good at sports, but I was too shy to try out.
Berk: I know what you mean. If I had listened to my art teacher, I would have applied to a fine arts programme. She always told me I was talented, but I didn’t believe her.
Defne: Do you have any regrets about university?
Berk: Well, if I hadn’t spent so much time playing video games in my first year, I could have got better grades. But I don’t regret choosing engineering. What about you?
Defne: I wish I had gone on the Erasmus exchange programme. If I had applied on time, I could have studied in Spain for a semester.

Looking back, there are a few things I wish I had done differently. First of all, I wish I had started learning a musical instrument when I was a child. If I had taken piano lessons, I could have played in the school band. I also regret not reading more books during the summer holidays. If I had read more, I would have improved my vocabulary much faster. However, I don’t regret spending time with my friends — those memories are priceless.
Your task: Write a paragraph (6–8 sentences) about your own wishes and regrets. Include:
• At least two things you wish you had done differently
• At least one third conditional sentence (If I had…, I would/could have…)
• One thing you do NOT regret
