Students will be able to draw conclusions for the past events in a text.
Read the text below. Then draw conclusions about the past events by answering the questions.
What Could Have Happened?
Last Saturday, Cem arrived at the cinema 30 minutes late. The film had already started. His friends were upset because they had been waiting for him outside. Cem’s phone was off, so they couldn’t reach him.
When Cem finally arrived, his clothes were wet and his shoes were muddy. He looked exhausted and was breathing heavily. He apologised to his friends and said he had a terrible journey.
Later, Cem’s friend Elif said, “He must have walked in the rain. He could have taken a taxi, but he probably didn’t have enough money. He should have charged his phone before leaving home.”
- a Why were Cem’s friends upset? What conclusion can you draw?
- b Based on Cem’s appearance (wet clothes, muddy shoes), what must have happened?
- c According to Elif, what should Cem have done differently?
- d Why couldn’t Cem’s friends contact him? What could he have done to prevent this?
Sonuç çıkarmak için ipucu kelimelere bak: “must have + V3” = kesin çıkarım, “could have + V3” = olasılık, “should have + V3” = eleştiri / yapması gereken.

Students will be able to draw conclusions for the past events in a text.
Read the situations below. For each one, draw a conclusion using past modals (must have, could have, should have, might have).
Drawing Conclusions
Situation 1: Ayşe studied very hard for the maths exam, but she got a low score. After the exam, she realised she had studied the wrong chapter.
Situation 2: Ozan was supposed to meet his friend at the park at 3 p.m. He arrived on time, but his friend was not there. He waited for an hour and then went home. Later, he found out that his friend had sent him a message saying he couldn’t come, but Ozan’s phone had no battery.
Situation 3: The school football team lost the final match 4–0. The coach said the players hadn’t practised enough during the week because of the mid-term exams.
- a Situation 1: What should Ayşe have done before the exam? Draw a conclusion about why she failed.
- b Situation 2: What could Ozan have done to avoid waiting for nothing?
- c Situation 3: Why must the team have lost? What should they have done?
“Should have + V3” = eleştiri (yapması gerekirdi). “Must have + V3” = kesin çıkarım (olmuş olmalı). “Could have + V3” = alternatif (yapabilirdi ama yapmadı).

Students will be able to write a letter to criticize an event/organization.
Read the model letter below. Then write a similar letter of criticism about an event you attended.
Model Letter
Dear Organising Committee,
I am writing to express my disappointment about the school science fair that took place on 15 November. Although the idea was good, the organisation could have been much better.
First of all, the event should have started on time. We waited for nearly an hour before the opening ceremony began. Secondly, there should have been more space for the project displays. Many students couldn’t find a table for their work. Finally, the judges could have spent more time evaluating each project instead of rushing through them.
I hope the next science fair will be better organised. Thank you for reading my feedback.
Yours sincerely,
Deniz Yilmaz
