Students will be able to identify the main conclusions in argumentative texts.
Read the argumentative text below and answer the questions.
Why Good Manners Still Matter in the Modern World
In today’s rapidly changing world, some people argue that traditional manners are outdated and unnecessary. However, being polite and showing respect to others remains essential for a peaceful and tolerant society. As globalization brings people from diverse cultures together, the way we treat one another becomes even more important. When we consider the feelings of others and react with kindness, we build stronger communities.

One of the strongest arguments for good manners is their role in intercultural communication. In a world of increasing diversity, understanding and respecting different cultural norms helps prevent misunderstandings. For example, what is considered polite in one culture may be seen as impolite in another. Being aware of these differences shows tolerance and a willingness to learn. People who take the time to consider how their words and actions affect others are more likely to form meaningful connections.

Furthermore, manners are not just about following rules — they reflect our values as a society. When we treat people with respect, regardless of their background, we promote a culture of acceptance and understanding. In conclusion, good manners are not a relic of the past; they are a vital tool for navigating the complexities of modern life and globalization. A society that values politeness, tolerance, and respect for diversity is a society that can face the future with confidence.
  1. a What is the writer’s main conclusion about manners in modern society?
  2. b What two arguments does the writer use to support this conclusion?
  3. c Do you agree with the writer’s conclusion? Why or why not? Write 2–3 sentences explaining your opinion.
Argümantatif bir metinde yazarın ana sonucunu (main conclusion) bulmak için genellikle son paragraftaki “In conclusion...” veya “Therefore...” gibi ifadelere bak. Destekleyici argümanlar ise genellikle gövde paragraflarının başında verilir. Kendi fikrini yazarken “I agree/disagree because...” kalıbını kullanabilirsin.
2 Reading — E12.10.R2 R2
Students will be able to organize description of events, feelings and wishes in diaries and personal letters.
The diary entry below has been divided into four paragraphs, but they are NOT in the correct order. Read the paragraphs and answer the questions.
An Intercultural Experience — Diary Entry
Paragraph A: Looking back, I regret not asking more questions about their cultural practices beforehand. I wish I had done more research before attending. If only I had known that removing shoes before entering was a sign of respect in their culture, I would not have caused such an awkward moment. Despite the misconception, the experience taught me an invaluable lesson about being open-minded.

Paragraph B: This morning I attended an intercultural workshop organized by foreign exchange students at our school. It was described as an icebreaker event for students from different countries to share their traditions. I was excited and curious to learn about customs I had never encountered before.

Paragraph C: During the workshop, I accidentally walked into one of the cultural rooms without removing my shoes. The students inside looked surprised, and one of them tried to interpret my actions in a frank but polite way. She explained that in her culture, entering a home with shoes is considered impolite. I felt embarrassed and immediately apologized for my mistake.

Paragraph D: As the summit of the day approached, we all gathered for a farewell ceremony. I felt grateful, humbled, and inspired. The workshop was more than just an event — it was a reminder that understanding different cultures requires patience, humility, and a genuine willingness to learn. I hope we have more events like this in the future.
  1. a Put the diary paragraphs in the correct chronological order. (Write the letters only, e.g. B, C, A, D)
  2. b What feelings does the writer express throughout the diary? List at least three different feelings.
  3. c What wish or regret does the writer mention at the end of the experience?
Günlük yazısındaki olayları kronolojik sıraya koymak için zaman belirten ifadelere dikkat et: “This morning,” “During the workshop,” “As the summit of the day approached,” ve “Looking back.” Yazarın duygularını bulmak için “excited, curious, embarrassed, grateful, humbled, inspired” gibi sıfat ve duygu ifadelerine bak. Pişmanlık için “I regret...” ve “I wish...” kalıplarına odaklan.

Read the model apology letter below, then write your own letter (8–10 sentences) to a friend apologizing for a misunderstanding about cultural differences.
Model Apology Letter
Dear Saki,

I am writing this letter to express my sincere apology for what happened at the dinner last Friday. I did not realize that speaking loudly at the table was considered impolite in your culture. I wish I had asked you about your customs beforehand. If only I had been more considerate, the evening would have gone much better. I deeply regret any dissatisfaction I may have caused. I hope you can forgive me, and I promise to be more polite and respectful in the future.

With my sincerest apology,
Deniz

Dear Alex,

I hope this letter finds you well! I am writing to tell you about an amazing cultural festival I attended last weekend. It was a celebration of diversity organized by our local community centre. People from many different backgrounds came together to share their traditions, food, and music. The bond between the participants was truly special, and I felt a strong sense of tolerance and mutual respect throughout the entire event.

Verilen kelimeleri (bond, colleague, common, diversity, favorable, unfavorable, specific, tolerance, proponent, timely, tip, treat) doğal bir şekilde cümlelerine yerleştir. Mektubu “Best wishes” veya “With love” gibi kapanışlarla bitir.
