Students will be able to find the supporting ideas in a text about good practices on human rights around the world.
Read the text below and answer the questions about good practices on human rights.
Standing Up for Equality
Every human being is born with certain fundamental rights — the right to freedom, dignity, and equality. Throughout history, people and organisations have worked tirelessly to protect these rights and fight against discrimination. One inspiring example is the work of the Nordic countries, where governments have made a strong contribution to justice by creating fair laws that guarantee equal treatment for all citizens regardless of their background.
In these countries, awareness campaigns are regularly held in schools and public spaces to educate people about their rights. Charity organisations also play a key role: they raise funds to support disadvantaged communities, provide legal aid to victims of prejudice, and organise events that promote social harmony. The results speak for themselves — these nations consistently rank highest in global human rights reports.
However, achieving full equality is still a work in progress. Experts argue that protecting human rights requires continuous effort, and every individual can contribute by treating others with fairness and respect. When communities come together to defend dignity, they build a society where justice is not just an ideal but a lived reality.
- a What is the main argument of the text?
- b List two supporting ideas the writer uses to strengthen the main argument.
- c How does the example of the Nordic countries support the main argument? Explain with details from the text.

Students will be able to match the paragraphs with the correct phrases/visuals.
Read the four paragraphs (A–D) about different human rights topics. Then match each paragraph with the correct heading below. Finally, choose one paragraph and explain why its heading fits.
Human Rights Around the World
Paragraph A: Millions of people around the world live in poverty, struggling to meet basic needs such as food, clean water, and shelter. Many disadvantaged communities lack access to healthcare and proper housing. International organisations provide donations and set up funds to help these people build better lives.
Paragraph B: Gender equality means that all people, regardless of whether they are male or female, deserve the same rights and opportunities. Unfortunately, in many parts of the world, women are still prejudiced against in the workplace and in education. Campaigns for equal pay and equal access to schooling continue to grow every year.
Paragraph C: Freedom of speech is the right to express opinions without fear of punishment. It is essential for a fair and democratic society. However, this freedom also comes with responsibility — people must use it without spreading hatred or threatening the safety and privacy of others.
Paragraph D: Every child has the right to quality education. Education is a powerful tool for breaking the cycle of poverty and building awareness about equality and justice. Governments and charities around the world are working to ensure that no child is left behind, especially in disadvantaged regions.
