1. Definition + Rich Everyday Explanation
Typo (noun) ( ˈtaɪ.pəʊ ) = a small mistake in typed or written text, especially a spelling or character error caused by pressing the wrong key or writing the wrong letter.
A typo is a minor, accidental error — not a lack of knowledge. Native speakers use this word to say, politely and casually, “This was a slip, not ignorance.” It often softens criticism and avoids sounding harsh.
In everyday use, typo commonly refers to mistakes in emails, messages, documents, subtitles, slides, and online posts. Because typing is fast, typos are expected — and forgiven.
MEANING 1: Small Accidental Text Error — VERY COMMON
This is the only real meaning. A typo is usually a missing letter, extra letter, wrong letter, or spacing mistake. It does not usually include grammar problems or wrong word choice — those are different kinds of errors.
Examples from the street:
- “Sorry — that was a typo” → a small accidental mistake
- “There’s a typo in the email” → a minor text error
- “Ignore the typo” → don’t worry about the small mistake
2. Most Common Patterns
Typo as text mistake — VERY COMMON:
- a typo in + noun → location of the mistake
- make a typo → accidentally type something wrong
- spot / notice a typo → see the error
- fix / correct a typo → repair the mistake
3. Phrasal Verbs
Note: “Typo” does not form phrasal verbs — these are related expressions:
- pick up on → notice something small or easily missed
Example: “She picked up on a typo in the report.” - clean up → remove small errors or imperfections
Example: “I cleaned up a few typos before sending it.” - slip through → escape notice unintentionally
Example: “A typo slipped through the final edit.”
