Traditional Clothing Around the World
Every culture has its own traditional clothing. These garments are more than just fabric — they represent history, identity and values.

Kimono (Japan): The kimono is one of the most elegant traditional garments in the world. It is made of silk or cotton and is longer than most Western dresses. Japanese people usually wear kimonos at weddings, tea ceremonies and New Year celebrations. The kimono symbolises respect and tradition.

Kilt (Scotland): The kilt is a knee-length skirt made of wool with a tartan pattern. It is heavier than a regular skirt because of the thick fabric. Scottish men wear kilts at formal events and national celebrations. The tartan pattern is the most important part because each family (clan) has its own unique design.

Kaftan (Türkiye): The kaftan is a long, loose robe that was more popular in the Ottoman Empire than it is today. It was made of the finest silk and decorated with gold thread. Kaftans were the most luxurious garments in Ottoman courts. Today, modern versions are simpler and cheaper than the originals.

Sari (India): The sari is the most colourful traditional garment in South Asia. It is a long piece of fabric — usually longer than five metres — draped around the body. Indian women wear saris at festivals, weddings and religious ceremonies. The sari is more versatile than most traditional clothes because it can be worn in many different styles.
  1. a What is the kimono made of? When do Japanese people wear it?
  2. b Why is the kilt heavier than a regular skirt?
  3. c Why is the tartan pattern the most important part of the kilt?
  4. d How are modern kaftans different from the originals?
  5. e Why is the sari described as more versatile than most traditional clothes?
  6. f Which garment is described as the most luxurious? Why?
Comparative yapılar: “-er + than” (shorter than, heavier than) veya “more + sıfat + than” (more popular than, more versatile than). Superlative yapılar: “the + -est” (the longest) veya “the most + sıfat” (the most elegant, the most colourful). Metindeki karşılaştırma ifadelerini bularak soruları cevaplayın.

Students will be able to answer comprehension questions on clothing in different cultures.
Read the text comparing two shopping methods and answer the questions.
Two Ways to Shop: Online Store vs Traditional Bazaar
Shopping has changed a lot in recent years. Today, people can choose between online stores and traditional bazaars. Both have advantages, but they are quite different from each other.

Online Shopping: Shopping online is faster than going to a physical store. You can compare prices more easily and find cheaper deals. Online stores are open 24 hours a day, so they are more convenient than bazaars. However, you cannot touch or try on the products, and delivery can sometimes be slower than expected. Online shopping is the most popular method among young people because it is the easiest way to shop from home.

Traditional Bazaar: A traditional bazaar is more exciting than an online store because you can see, touch and smell the products. The bazaar experience is more personal — you can talk to the sellers and bargain for a better price. Fresh food at the bazaar is usually fresher than in supermarkets. However, bazaars are more crowded and noisier than online stores, and the prices are not always the cheapest. The Grand Bazaar in Istanbul is one of the oldest and the largest covered markets in the world.
  1. a Why is online shopping faster than going to a physical store?
  2. b What is the biggest disadvantage of online shopping mentioned in the text?
  3. c Why is the bazaar experience described as more personal?
  4. d Which shopping method is the most popular among young people? Why?
  5. e What makes the Grand Bazaar special according to the text?
Karşılaştırma yapılarına dikkat edin: “faster than”, “more convenient than”, “the most popular”, “the largest”. Her sorunun cevabı metinde bir comparative veya superlative yapısı ile verilmiştir.
