Read the text below. Identify the main idea and the supporting details.
The Power of Shared Values
Values are the guiding principles that shape how people behave and make decisions in a society. They are not only important for individuals but also for communities as a whole. When members of a society share common values such as honesty, respect and solidarity, they build stronger relationships and create a more peaceful environment.

For example, in Turkish culture, hospitality is considered one of the most important values. Turkish people are not only hospitable but also generous and warm-hearted. This value strengthens social bonds and makes visitors feel welcome. Similarly, the value of respect for elders helps maintain harmony between generations.

On the other hand, when societies lose their core values, problems such as inequality, discrimination and conflict can arise. Neither wealth nor technology alone can replace the role of shared moral values in keeping a society together. Therefore, teaching values to younger generations is essential for the future of every nation.
  1. a What is the main idea of this text? Write it in one sentence.
  2. b Find two supporting details that explain why shared values are important.
  3. c According to the text, what happens when societies lose their core values?
  4. d Which Turkish cultural value is mentioned as an example? How does it affect society?
Main idea = metnin en önemli mesajı. Supporting details = ana fikri destekleyen örnekler ve açıklamalar. Ana fikir genellikle ilk veya son paragrafta bulunur. Örnekler ise orta paragraflarda verilir.

Students will be able to distinguish the main idea from supporting details in a text about the effects of values on societies.
Read the following text. Then answer the questions by distinguishing the main idea from the supporting details.
Values Across Cultures
Every culture in the world has its own set of values and norms that guide people’s behaviour. While some values are unique to certain societies, others are universal. For instance, both Eastern and Western cultures value education, hard work and family bonds.

However, the way these values are practised can differ greatly. In some cultures, community needs come before individual desires. People believe that neither personal success nor material wealth matters more than the well-being of the group. In contrast, other cultures place greater emphasis on individual freedom and personal achievement.

Understanding these differences is crucial in today’s globalised world. When people respect each other’s values, they can build bridges between cultures instead of walls. As Mevlana once said, true connection comes from seeing the humanity in every person, regardless of their background.
  1. a What is the main idea of the text? State it in your own words.
  2. b Give one example of a universal value mentioned in the text.
  3. c What is the difference between cultures that prioritise community and those that prioritise the individual?
  4. d Why is understanding cultural differences important according to the last paragraph?
Main idea ile supporting detail’i karıştırma. Ana fikir = metnin GENEL mesajı (tek cümleyle özetlenebilir). Supporting detail = ana fikri destekleyen örnekler, istatistikler veya alıntılar.

Model Essay
Why Values Matter

Values and norms play a vital role in every society. They are the invisible rules that help people live together in peace and harmony. Without shared values, communities would struggle to function properly.

One of the most important effects of values is that they create trust between people. When everyone in a society values honesty, people feel safe and confident in their daily interactions. Similarly, the value of solidarity encourages people to help one another during difficult times.

In conclusion, values are not only the foundation of a healthy society but also the key to a better future. Both individuals and communities benefit when moral values are respected and taught to younger generations.
Your task: Write an essay (8–12 sentences) about the importance and effects of values and norms. Include:
• An introduction explaining what values and norms are
• Examples of important values (e.g. respect, honesty, solidarity, tolerance)
• The effects of these values on society (use correlative conjunctions: “not only…but also”, “both…and”, “neither…nor”)
• A conclusion about why values should be preserved
Essay yapısı: Giriş (values nedir?) Gelişme (örnekler + etkiler) Sonuç (neden önemli?). Correlative conjunction kullan: “not only…but also”, “both…and”, “neither…nor”, “either…or”.
