Autobiography ve biography arasındaki farklar!
While biography is an account of life written by someone else, autobiography is an account of life about its own writer. In other words, if you write about someone else’s life, that is a biography. But if you write about your own life, that is now an autobiography.
Autobiography kullanımı
- Autobiographical works are by nature subjective.
- The unwillingness of the author to accurately recall his/her own memories often may mislead the readers
- Some sociologists and psychologists have noted that autobiography offers the author the ability to recreate history.
- An autobiographical novel is a form of a novel using autofiction techniques. The literary technique is distinguished from an autobiography or memoir by the stipulation of being fiction. Because an autobiographical novel is partially fiction, the author does not ask the reader to expect the text to fulfill the “autobiographical pact”. Names and locations are often changed and events are recreated to make them more dramatic but the story still bears a close resemblance to that of the author’s life. While the events of the author’s life are recounted, there is no pretense of exact truth. Events may be exaggerated or altered for artistic or thematic purposes.

1- Spiritual autobiography
Spiritual autobiography is an account of an author’s struggle or journey towards God, followed by conversion of a religious conversion, often interrupted by moments of regression. The author re-frames his or her life as a demonstration of divine intention through encounters with the Divine.
2- Fictional autobiography
The term “fictional autobiography” signifies novels about a fictional character written as though the character were writing their own autobiography, meaning that the character is the first-person narrator and that the novel addresses both internal and external experiences of the character.
3- Memoirs
A memoir is slightly different in character from an autobiography. While an autobiography typically focuses on the “life and times” of the writer, a memoir has a narrower, more intimate focus on his or her own memories, feelings, and emotions. Memoirs have often been written by politicians or military leaders as a way to record and publish an account of their public exploits. One early example is that of Julius Caesar’s Commentarii de Bello Gallico, also known as Commentaries on the Gallic Wars Henry Thoreau tarafından yazılan Walden, güzel bir Memoirs örneği olarak gösterilebiir.

Aziz Augustine of Hippo tarafından M.Ö. 397-400 yılları arası yazılan The Confessions of Saint Augustine ya da diğer adıyla Confessions in Thirteen Books ilk dini otobiyografi (Spiritual autobiography) örneklerin biri olarak gösterilir. Eserde Aziz Augustine’nin kendi hayatından günahkar gençliği ve nasıl hıristiyan olduğu anlatılıyor. Bu ile otobiyografi örneği toplamda 13 kitaptan oluşmaktadır.

Our second example comes from Daniel Defoe. İlk kez 1722 yılında basılmış olan Moll Flanders otobiyografi türlerimizden biri olan fictional autobiography yani kurgusal otobiyografiye güzel bir örnektir. Ancak Moll Flanders romanı yayıncı tarafından 1722 yılında ilk olarak basıldığında “private history” olarak yayınlanmıştı ve henüz bir yazara sahip değildi. Daha sonra 1731 yılında Defoe’ nun ölümünün ardından 177o yılında ilk kez Daniel Defoe adı esere yazar olarak eklenmiştir.

Jean-Jacques Rousseau tarafından yazılan “The Confessions” başka bir büyük otobiyografi örneğimizdir. Ancak Rousseau tarafından yazılan Confessions, türünün diğer ilk örneklerinden olan The Confessions of Saint Augustine otobiyografisinden önemli bir yönüyle ayrılmaktadır. Aziz Augustine tarafından yazılan the confessions dini ve ruhani bir perspektiften yazılırken, Rousseau tarafından yazılan the confessions ise, bireyin içsel dünyasına odaklanmış, kişisel deneyimi ve duyguları günlük sıradan hayatından, herkesin yaşayabileceği bir açıdan ele almıştır. Öyle ki eserinin ünlü açılış cümlesi ile bunu şu şekilde vurgulamaktadır:
“I have resolved on an enterprise which has no precedent and which, once complete, will have no imitator. My purpose is to display to my kind a portrait in every way true to nature, and the man I shall portray will be myself”
